Difference between online educational content and openly licensed educational content

Online educational content is people can use the internet for obtaining any knowledge. Such as online video courses, online quizzes, and journal articles. And people must ask for permission from the original creator in order to access the online content. However, openly licensed educational content is giving permission to the public to access it and it is also open to the public. Which is the easiest and scandalized way for people access to educational resources online (OER Africa, 2020).  Moreover, OCW, OER, and MOOCs will be the three examples of openly licensed educational content and they released the license for students free of charge and do not need to ask for permission.

An open educational resources (OER)example

The good example I find is Saylor Academy , which is a non-profit organization that provides free courses of educational materials(online courses). The website includes 317 free courses from U.S. colleges and it is open for the public under a Creative Commons license. (Wikipedia)

OER valuation

Relevance: The Saylor Academy provides 317 free college-level courses with high enrollment such as Art History, Biology, Business Administrator and etc. The online coursed includes lectures, texts, and other resources

Accuracy: This website is very professional and the information is accurate. Because the materials are “peer-reviewed for accuracy and quality, and comparability to similar courses at a U.S. college” (Wikipedia,2019) Moreover, there are not any spelling errors.

Production Quality: The information is clear and understandable. It is very easy and convenient to use the course catalog to find the information people want to access. The search engine can also guide people efficiently. I think online tests and quizzes help the student to obtain knowledge and the main points of the courses. Saylor Academy does not include many videos and the websites use many texts and pictures. Maybe adding some multimedia resources will make the course material more vivid and interesting for the students.

Accessibility: The resource is not available in alternative formats and it is only can view online by the viewers.

Interactivity: The resources encourage active learning by providing a free certificate of completion and providing zero-tuition transfer credit for students. Moreover, there are many quizzes and final exams for students to test their understanding of the courses.

Licensing: The license for Saylor Academyallows for educational reuse of the material and people can also adapt and adopt in order to satisfy individuals’ needs.

In conclusion, I think Saylor Academy for students learn different courses they are interested in and they can obtain knowledge effectively by using it.

OeR in my own life

Personally, I think OER is an efficient tool for my learning. As a student, I can use OER to get knowledge any time and anywhere. And there are also many kinds of ways I can use open learning to study a new course or material. And I can use the tests to find out whether I have mastered the knowledge and consolidated the key points
