Most memorable online learning experience

Last year I took a French online course in another college in Vancouver (Selkirk college). Since the credits could be transferred to Uvic directly and I could take the online course in Victoria, I chose to take this online course. I am really interested in learning another foreign language because I think it is very useful, helping me make new friends from other countries and providing benefits when I travel to foreign countries. I clearly remembered that I had 9 videos and quizzes every week. I need to watch the video first. The videos contained the main points and things we need to study during that semester. The videos were very short and clear, which were easy to understand. After watching the videos, I need to do some quizzes corresponding to the key points of the course materials. I think the quizzes helped me to strengthen major points in an efficient way. I could use quizzes to test myself and master knowledge. Therefore, I could leak fill a vacancy quickly and review the course materials productively. And we also need to upload our speaking homework online. We need to record and upload before the due date.

There are many things I learned from this online course. Firstly, the due date was at the end of the week and the instructor always posted the course material on Monday, which means I can manage my study time in a flexible way. Secondly, I could chat with other classmates on the course website and ask them any questions about the course, giving me access to improve the things I was not good at. This is a convenient way to talk with my classmates. I could also learn new knowledge from my classmates. Thirdly, I think I really like the videos of French online courses, which were vivid and clear. I think these videos increased my interest in learning French and made the online class lively. Lastly, I think this course helped me learn French efficiently, making me want to take more online courses in the future.

Humanizing online learning

I think this French online course utilized a good way to connect learners and instructors. There was a special section on the course website for students to ask or answer questions. The instructors would reply to students’ questions quickly, and the instructor also provided his email and phone number for students to contact him at any time. I think this class fully helped students actively participate in the course, allowing students to interact with their teachers and classmates at any time.

Grading

I think the grading system for this course is really fair. It contained several quizzes and one final exam. The quizzes were all about how much knowledge you know. If you watch every video and practice before the quizzes, you can easily get a good grade.

Broadcast (one-way) versus communicative (two way)media

I think the French class combined both broadcast and communicative media. I think the class material was mainly about the broadcast. Each student faced exactly the same video and quizzes, which ensured a common standard of learning. The email of instructor and online discussion forum are communicative media, which helped students communicate with other classmates and instructor without a present in the same place.
